Liam Polworth determined to seize Inverness chance

Liam Polworth is determined to seize his last chance to become an Inverness first-team regular.

Polworth feared his career at his home town club was coming to an end after playing only six times last season but he secured a new one-year contract in the summer.

The 21-year-old has already played 12 times this term amid an injury crisis at Caley Thistle and he is looking to cement his place in the team long term.

Polworth, whose side host Dundee in the Ladbrokes Premiership on Saturday, said: "I'm delighted to be getting a game and given the chance to play.

"Sometimes I haven't played as well as I should have played but I'm just delighted to get a shot and hopefully every time I play I can show something different.

"I have stuck about and waited for my chance and now I've got it hopefully I can keep playing.

"At the end of last season I was out of contract and I was forced to look elsewhere but I got another deal so I stayed and thought to myself 'I have maybe got one more chance'."

Caley Thistle's injury problems have worsened following successive home defeats to St Johnstone and Ross County with Miles Storey struggling with a knee problem.

They could have at least 10 players out against Dundee but manager John Hughes wants them to upset the odds.

"The quicker we get these boys back and everyone's fighting for places, the better for me," Hughes said.

"But in the meantime we just roll our sleeves up.

"We are not getting results and we are being written off. Let that galvanise us and let's go and prove people wrong.

"That's when Inverness are at their best and I expect that on Saturday."

Meanwhile, Dundee manager Paul Hartley maintains his players are ready to atone for the disappointment of last weekend's home defeat by Kilmarnock when they head north this weekend.

The Dens Park side suffered a 2-1 loss at home to Gary Locke's side, which saw them slip down a place into seventh slot in the Ladbrokes Premiership.

They will be without skipper James McPake, who suffered a groin injury in training, while Julen Etxabeguren remains out with an ankle injury and Kevin Thomson is not ready to return from a knee problem.

However, Dundee know a win over Caley Thistle in the Highlands on Saturday could see them move back into the top six and Hartley believes they are all geared up to make amends.

Hartley said: "We were disappointed with how we played in the Kilmarnock match.

"We were just flat all over the pitch. That's what happened on the day.

"What we had worked on beforehand we didn't carry out but this is another game to look forward to. The lads have worked hard in training all week and will be ready for this match.

"It's always a tough 90 minutes against Inverness, whether it's home or away, and we know that.

"We know what they're capable of their day and it was a tight match at Dens Park earlier in the season. We expect it to be like that again and they have some very good players."
