Hayes not hanging around

Inverness winger Jonny Hayes saved himself from an extreme punishment at the hands of manager Terry Butcher after redeeming himself on the way to a 4-2 home win against 10-man Hibernian.

Richie Foran and Adam Rooney had put Caley two up before Hayes' misjudged backpass allowed Derek Riordan to score for the visitors, who lost Paul Hanlon to a red card. But thankfully for 23-year-old Hayes, he secured his own salvation by setting up Rooney's second and third goals, which came either side of a Liam Miller penalty.

"I was just about to build a scaffold for him," joked Butcher, when quizzed on his thoughts following the error. "He was going to be hung on Monday morning. But you don't have to say anything to him because he knows and he's got character."

He added: "He bounced back really quickly and showed the character by coming back and setting up Adam Rooney."

Caley Thistle moved to fourth in the Clydesdale Bank Premier League table, while Rooney's second-half hat-trick, took his goal tally for the season to 13 in all competitions.
