Butcher pleased with progress

Terry Butcher is glad to see his side off the bottom of the SPL and even more pleased to see a challenger to his striking options

Terry Butcher has the welcome dilemma of having two strikers vying for the lead role in his side.

Billy McKay made an encouraging first start for the club in the centre-forward role as Inverness got off the bottom of the SPL table with a 2-1 away win against St Mirren park on Saturday.

The former Northern Ireland Under-21 international had made just two substitute appearances after recovering from the ankle injury he suffered in his first training session since joining Caley Thistle from Northampton in the summer.

But Butcher believes he is now ready to challenge Gregory Tade, who has scored six goals this season. Butcher, whose side will welcome Dundee United on Saturday, said:

"Billy's not had much chance but he's worked hard and when he scored two goals in a friendly with Ross County last midweek I decided to put him in against St Mirren. I felt the time was right to freshen things up front.

Billy did very well indeed and didn't tire as readily as I'd expected through lack of games. But I sent on Gregory Tade for McKay in the last 15 minutes and Tade showed great professionalism by going out and making an impact against a tiring defence.

I'm pleased Billy's determination has been rewarded with a good performance and both he and Tade are now challenging for a shirt on Saturday, which is good for the team."
