Materazzi accepts damages

Internazionale defender Marco Materazzi has accepted substantial damages over articles which said he used vile racist abuse to insult Zinedine Zidane.

Materazzi was not at London's High Court on Monday for the settlement of his libel case against Associated Newspapers.

In its coverage of the World Cup final between Italy and France in 2006, the Daily Mail showed a picture of Materazzi being head-butted by Zidane, captioned "Revealed: the insult that made Zidane see red".

The newspaper accused Materazzi of calling Zidane "the son of a terrorist whore".

The newspaper has accepted that all of the allegations were wholly untrue.
