Jose gives up on Lampard

Internazionale have finally signalled an end to their attempts to sign Chelsea midfielder Frank Lampard this summer.

The Italian champions had hoped to lure the 30-year-old England international to the San Siro, with Lampard into the final year of his current Blues contract and unable to agree a new extended deal.

However, former Blues boss Jose Mourinho, now in charge at Inter, now accepts that that is not going to happen.

He said: "I'm not disappointed in him, the important thing for a player is to do what's best for him.

"If his choice is to stay at Chelsea because he is happier, that's okay with me."

Mourinho added of his current Inter squad: "We have too many players and it's not an easy situation, we need to reduce the squad to 25 players.

"For the moment we have too many forwards and we can't give them all as much playing time as we would like."

Inter director Gabriele Oriali told reporters: "Now we will work on trimming the squad because Mourinho wants 22 players and three goalkeepers. There will be some painful goodbyes."
