Benitez fights to keep Maicon

Internazionale head coach Rafa Benitez remains hopeful of being able to fend off the advances of Real Madrid and keep Brazil defender Maicon at the European champions.

The 29-year-old has been linked with a switch to the Bernabeu for much of the summer, but new Inter boss Benitez does not want to lose the South American wing-back.

He commented: "Maicon made the difference in many games last season. We know that Real Madrid are interested, but he is too important for us.

"I can certainly say that he wants to win. Well, we all want to keep winning together.

"Last season, he did great work for the team and he has remarkable attacking qualities. As a coach I want him in my squad."
