Moratti scoffs at own penalty conspiracy theories

Inter Milan president Massimo Moratti has poured cold water on his own suggestions that a penalty conspiracy was being waged against his team.

Inter have given away five penalties in eight league matches this season, prompting Moratti to suggest after their last game on Wednesday, a 1-1 draw at Atalanta, that there was more to it than simple coincidence.

But the nerazzurri chief has now played down that idea.

"We know there have been some mistakes but we too have made some mistakes," said Moratti.

"We're not painting ourselves as victims, we're realists, just as we were when we were winning and we weren't being favoured."

Inter have got off to a terrible start in the league, winning just two of their eight matches so far to slip to fifth from bottom of Serie A.

But Moratti is now keen to avoid appearing to be making excuses.

"Let's just say we're annoyed at how easily dubious (penalties) have been given against us.

"But without thinking about a conspiracy or a plot, there is no link to what happened in the past and what's happening now.

"It hasn't cost us a lot of points because we don't have many."
