Gabor Kiraly retires from Hungary duty

Veteran goalkeeper Gabor Kiraly has announced his international retirement with a Hungary record of 107 caps.

The 40-year-old helped lead Hungary to the last 16 of Euro 2016n where he became the oldest player ever to appear at the tournament, but has decided now is the right time to end his Hungary career.

"I still have my motivation and my obligation, but the 24 years spent in professional football - of which 18 in the national team - have left their trace," he said in a statement on his official website.

The former Crystal Palace goalkeeper - who is famed for wearing tracksuit bottoms during matches - is set to play on for his hometown club Szombathelyi Haladas in Hungary's top-flight.

"I am a perfectionist and I want to play perfectly, but at the age of 40, this is impossible in both the club and the national team at the same time," he added.

"Bernd Storck, coach of the national team, allowed me to choose whether I want to continue or not.

"I decided that there is no worthier farewell than a performance at the European Championship, which got Hungary into a football fever and caused massive happiness for the Hungarian people and after which Hungarian football got back onto the European 'big stage'."
