Chairman Adam Pearson has revealed that Hull City must reduce the size of their squad before they can look to make any new signings in January.
The recently returned chief has told manager Phil Brown that he will have to sell before he can buy in the new year due to the state of the finances at the KC Stadium.
"Players coming in next January completely depends on players going out. No question about that," said Pearson, who returned to office earlier in the week following the resignation of Paul Duffen.
"I said that to the manager and he accepts players won't be coming in unless others are going out.
"If we can get the numbers down to what we want, then there will be money to spend.
"Hopefully that will be the case as there are some key positions in the team that need strengthening."
Hull are currently struggling down in 19th place in the table with the pressure mounting on the manager following last weekend's 2-0 defeat at Burnley.
