Hull City manager Phil Brown hopes to tempt Derby County midfielder Adam Bolder back to the club.
The 26-year-old made 22 appearances for Hull before moving to the Rams almost seven years ago.
Bolder has become marginalised at Pride Park recently, making only two appearances in the last three months and is expected to leave the club this month.
"We're short in midfield and I'm working hard to bring in a midfielder within the next week," said former Derby boss Brown, who is also being linked with Southampton's David Prutton and County's Seth Johnson.
"Having had both Adam and Seth at Derby, I know their strengths and they're both good players. I won't bring both in because there isn't room, but at the same time I'm not writing off David Prutton."
