Tigers agree fee for Beye
07 Aug 2009 - 07:45:22
Hull City are close to adding a third new player to their squad in quick succession after agreeing a fee with Newcastle United for defender Habib Beye.
The Tigers snapped up midfielder Seyi Olofinjana from Stoke City and USA international striker Jozy Altidore on loan from Villarreal on Thursday before chairman Paul Duffen revealed that a deal for Beye was also close.
"Habib Beye is a player we believe can add quality to the Hull squad," he said.
"We are hoping to engage in conversation with him in the next couple of days."
Beye has spent two seasons with the Magpies and was named the club's player of the year in 2008.
The 31-year-old right-back previously captained Marseille and has won 35 international caps for Senegal.
Earlier in the week, Hull boss Phil Brown admitted he was frustrated at Newcastle's handling of the transfer.
"To hear that he has handed in a transfer request shows the intention that Habib Beye wants to leave Newcastle first and foremost," he said.
"Two, that he knows of our interest, and three that the transfer valuation for him is something that we're not prepared to go to.
"But I'll emphasise it again, who do you deal with at Newcastle? Is it the chief exec? Is it the chairman or is it a manager? We're not sure and therein lies the grey area."
