New Tigers contract for Duke
26 Feb 2009 - 09:28:56
Hull City have handed goalkeeper Matt Duke a new and improved contract which will keep him at the KC Stadium until summer 2011.
Duke, 31, has replaced Boaz Myhill as the Tigers number one since the turn of the year and has put pen to paper on a one-year extension.
The keeper joined Hull from Burton Albion in a £20,000 deal five years ago but was sidelined last year following surgery to remove a testicular tumour.
"It's great news for the club and it's certainly great news from Matt's point of view," manager Phil Brown told the club's official website.
"Less than a couple of years ago he was probably staring at the abyss, wondering where his career and his life were going.
"Since then, he's managed to get over the horrendous illness that he had and get back in the frame. Not only is he back in the frame, but he's back in the first team.
"The contract is a reward for all of the hard work he's put in over the last year or two.
"He's pushed Boaz Myhill to the extent that he's now found himself in front of Bo.
"I sat down with his agent a couple of weeks ago and contract talks were very simple.
"There were no great demands and no complexities, but that is Matt Duke for you."
