England Under-21 international Fraizer Campbell will not be returning to the KC Stadium, according to Hull City boss Phil Brown.
Despite agreeing a fee with Manchester United for the permanent transfer of the youngster, the deal remained incomplete and Sunderland now look to have won the race for Campbell's signature, who spent a successful loan spell with the Tigers during the 2007-08 season.
"I'm disappointed but I was always nervous about the deal because of the way it was dragging along," Brown told the Hull Daily Mail.
"But things happen for a reason and, as far as Hull City are concerned, the only ones I'm interested in getting through the door are players who want to play for the club.
"I took a phone call from Sir Alex (Ferguson) and he was apologetic that the player had not come to us.
"He firmly believed this was the right club for Fraizer but he's obviously getting advice from somewhere else."
