Hull City striker Ben Burgess could be out of action for eight months after sustaining a cruciate knee ligament injury.
The former Stockport County forward, who has scored 18 goals for the promotion-chasing Tigers this season, had an arthroscope on the problem that confirmed the bad news.
"We know that Ben has damaged the cruciate ligament and the only thing we're not sure about is how long he'll be out for," Peter Taylor told the club's official website.
"It looks like it'll be at least between six and eight months and, of course, we're all deeply disappointed for Ben.
"He's had an excellent season for us and will be badly missed, but all we can do is get on with things."
