Brown hopeful over Turner
11 Feb 2009 - 14:24:59
Hull City boss Phil Brown believes defender Michael Turner is close to breaking into the England squad.
Head coach Fabio Capello is believed to have cast his eye over the centre-half during last weekend's goalless draw with Chelsea at Stamford Bridge and Brown believes a first call-up could be on the horizon.
The former Charlton Athletic and Brentford youngster has earned plenty of plaudits in his 28 appearances for the Tigers this season.
"I had a casual conversation with the England physio (Gary Lewin) at a dinner last Thursday and he said Fabio Capello was interested in Jimmy (Bullard) and Michael," Brown told the Hull Daily Mail.
"It was a conversation to gauge if the players were fit enough to play against Spain.
"Fabio Capello was at the game on Saturday and, as far as Michael was concerned, he gave a performance worthy of interest.
"We got a phone call from Gary Lewin at 6pm on Saturday evening to say that Michael would not be required. But just to be in the thoughts of the England set-up is massively encouraging.
"Fingers crossed, Michael will continue to show the form he has done all season and who knows?"
