Brown hails youthful Tigers
26 Aug 2009 - 09:44:29
Hull City manager Phil Brown described Tuesday's 3-1 Carling Cup second round win over Southend United as a good day at the office.
The Tigers avoided the potential banana skin of the League One outfit with youngster Tom Cairney, new boy Jozy Altidore and Brazilian Geovanni on the mark for the Premier League side.
"The bottom line is it has been a good night at the office because of the win and the youthful exuberance of the team," said Brown.
"It was important the young lads got some experience at first-team level.
"It gives us another opportunity to see the rest of the young lads that didn't play tonight.
"They have given good pictures for me and I feel my squad is stronger."
Meanwhile, Brown is predicting big things from Altidore after the USA international striker scored on his first start for the club.
Speaking about the on-loan teenager, he added: "The biggest bonus of the night wasn't just the fact some young lads have made their debuts and done well, it was getting 90 minutes out of Jozy Altidore.
"He hit the winning goal and he's probably still suffering from jet-lag having arrived on Friday.
"He played a full competitive game - and it was competitive, Southend were no slouches."
