Brown: Owen interest genuine
26 Jun 2009 - 14:06:21
Phil Brown has urged Michael Owen to consider continuing his Premier League career with Hull City.
The soon to be out-of-contract Newcastle United striker is interesting both the Tigers and Stoke City, and Hull boss Brown has confirmed that he is serious about signing Owen.
The 29-year-old striker's contract with the Magpies expires next week and he will then be able to sign for another club on a free transfer.
The former Liverpool and Real Madrid forward has suggested he could be tempted to head overseas again, but Brown is hoping to persuade him that the KC Stadium is the ideal place to resurrect his career.
"He's still connected to a football club, we haven't been given permission by that football club to talk to him, so we'll honour that," he told Sky Sports News.
"But he'll be available from July 1 and hopefully if Michael gives us the time of day and we can get around a table, then who knows?
"To bring, not a former international, a present international, an England international to the club would be a great achievement for myself personally, but for the football club.
"Yes, it's one we're interested in. It isn't a throw-away comment, it's a genuine interest. As a free transfer, that would be an interesting prospect for a number of clubs.
"Yes, if we could sit down around a table with Michael and his advisors and maybe draft a deal up that would be workable for both sides, who knows?
"It could be a good start to the transfer market for us."
