Barmby cools European talk
08 Dec 2008 - 11:54:43
Veteran Hull City midfielder Nicky Barmby has played down suggestions that the Premier League's surprise package could secure European football for next season.
The Tigers consolidated their place in the top six with Saturday's 2-1 victory over Middlesbrough at the KC Stadium.
But the former England international has stressed the importance of focus to the top-flight newcomers with more than half of the season still remaining.
"The manager has got a three-year plan but the main thing is for us to stay in the Premier League" he said.
"No-one is talking about Europe at the club, we won't be doing anything like that.
"We need to stay in the Premier League, even if it's fourth bottom.
"We're doing very well at the minute and long may it continue, but our goal right from the start of the season has been staying in the Premier League."
Meanwhile, the 34-year-old is hoping to play on for another season by earning a new contract with the Tigers.
Barmby's current deal expires at the end of this season.
"I can't see me playing for another club," he added. "You can never say never but I love it here. I want to play for as long as I can here."
