The Tigers' leading marksman last season, Matty Fryatt, has been ruled out for this campaign due to an Achilles injury, while current top goalscorer Sone Aluko has been sidelined for two months with a similar problem.
Hull spurned several goalscoring chances in the weekend defeat at Brighton and Bruce's frustration is growing. "We made an inquiry (about Boyd)," Bruce said after Saturday's 1-0 defeat.
"That is all we did. "He is someone who is out of contract in the summer and we inquired about him. We will see what the next 24 to 48 hours bring."
