Jozy Altidore scored his first Hull goal as the Tigers claimed a place in the third round of the Carling Cup with a 3-1 win over Southend.[LNB] The USA striker marked his first start by doubling a much-changed Hull side's lead after a brilliant opener from debutant Tom Cairney at the KC Stadium.[LNB] League One Southend made life difficult for their top-flight hosts by replying through Franck Moussa but substitute Geovanni wrapped up the win.[LNB] Late goals from Lee Bowyer and Lee Carsley saw Birmingham safely through to the third round of the Carling Cup after they survived a scare to win 2-1 at Southampton.[LNB] The League One side went ahead through a superb goal from academy starlet Adam Lallana, and were for long periods the better side. But old stagers Bowyer and Carsley struck within three minutes of each other as the Premier League Blues squeezed through.[LNB] Blackburn overcame Gillingham 3-1. David Dunn and David Hoilett put the Premier League side 2-0 up and although Simeon Jackson pulled one back from the penalty spot, the tie was sewn up when Morten Gamst Pedersen's corner went in at the back post, via an unfortunate deflection off Barry Fuller.[LNB] Midfielder Mark Davies' first goal for Bolton ensured they avoided an upset with a 1-0 victory against League One Tranmere in their Carling Cup second-round tie at Prenton Park.[LNB] Wanderers looked low on confidence early on but when Davies latched on to namesake Kevin's through-ball to break the deadlock in the 41st minute the pressure was eased.[LNB] Portsmouth put their Premier League problems on the backburner for a night after storming into the third round with a comfortable 4-1 win over Hereford.[LNB] Frederic Piquionne, John Utaka, Niko Kranjcar and Richard Hughes fired Portsmouth, whose ownership issues are still dragging on through.
