Phil Brown In the Tiger hunt: Hull boss Phil Brown saw his side win clash against Southend Hull City manager Phil Brown promised to treat the Carling Cup 'with the respect it deserves'. But by omitting the entire team he selected for Saturday's win over Bolton, he seemed to be making a damning statement about the competition. Nevertheless, Tom Cairney and Jozy Altidore spared Brown any embarrassment by opening their Hull accounts and Geovanni added a late third to ensure a 3-1 win over Southend, for whom Franck Moussa pulled a goal back. Cairney set the ball rolling with a stunning 25-yard effort and American Altidore, making his first start for the club, equalled it in quality with a fine strike three minutes before the break. Moussa halved the deficit in injury time but substitute Geovanni's half-volley sealed the Tigers' place in the next round with 15 minutes remaining. Wolves manager Mick McCarthy changed his entire first-team at home to Swindon and was taken into extra time with the game locked at 0-0 after 90 minutes. The League One visitors hit the woodwork twice in the first half as Wolves and debutant Kevin Doyle struggled. Mark Davies Winning goal: Mark Davies fired in the decisive goal for Bolton There were nerves for Bolton at Tranmere but John Barnes' team failed to pull off an upset as they lost 1-0. Bolton midfielder Mark Davies handed Gary Megson's side their first win of the season, firing home his first goal for the club from inside the box after a pass from his namesake Kevin.
