Phil Brown's potential successors at Hull

Paul Jewell, 45 [LNB]Jewell has been out of work for over a year after leaving Derby at the end of 2008, but has experience of keeping struggling clubs in the top flight. His Bradford side clinched survival on the final day of the season in 2000 by beating Liverpool, while in 2007 Wigan also left it until the final day to ensure their Premier League status. Lives in nearby Leeds, and has been linked to a number of recent vacancies. This might be the one that tempts him. Owner Adam Pearson's hands-off style of ownership should suit him, but he has never managed or played for a northern club before, and nobody knows whether the desire is still there. Odds: 3/1[LNB]Gareth Southgate, 39[LNB]Sacked as Middlesbrough manager in October, Southgate's earnest, cerebral style has won him admiration, even though results have often failed to vindicate his approach. Southgate is carving out a decent career as a television pundit and it remains to be seen whether he would relish giving up his ITV microphone for the muck and nettles of a relegation scrap. Even then, his lack of experience may count against him. Odds: 7/2[LNB]Brian Horton, 61[LNB]Hull's assistant manager will take interim charge of the team, but a run of good results could see him kept on a permanent basis. If only for the sake of continuity, Horton would certainly be the players' choice, but has not managed at Premier League level for 15 years, when he almost narrowly escaped relegation as manager of Manchester City. Odds: 5/1[LNB]Steve Coppell, 54[LNB]Since lasting just 33 days at Manchester City and returning to Crystal Palace not once but three times, Coppell has chosen his clubs carefully. He has turned down offers from Brighton, QPR and Crystal Palace (again) in recent months, but an opportunity to join a Premier League club with stable ownership and a loyal fanbase would be a different matter. Odds: 7/1[LNB]
