Hull City v Stoke City live!

09 May 2009 14:00
90 + 5 GOAL DAWSON (1-2)!!![LNB]90 + 4 The KC Stadium is half empty as Hull resort to more long-ball tactic which Stoke gobble up. However, the home side do have a free-kick 25 yards from goal.[LNB]90 + 2 Fuller heads off as Stephen Kelly enters the game as Stoke attempt to run down the clock.[LNB]90 ADDED TIME: There will be a minimum of six (SIX) minutes added time as Stoke fans chant, "it's just like watching Brazil". There could yet be a twist.[LNB]88 Fuller bursts onto a bouncing ball 10 yards from goal, but his header is straight at Myhill. That would have been embarrassing for the Tigers.[LNB]86 Mendy lumps a hopeful ball into the Stoke box, but Sorensen, unchallenged, claims with ease.[LNB]85 Etherington - who has put in a good shift - makes way for Danny Pugh.[LNB]83 Stoke charge forward with Lawrence again the driving force, but Ricketts defends at the back post.[LNB]81 Hull look a beaten side. They cannot be faulted for effort as Ricketts drags just wide from the edge of the box, however, it appears the points belong to Stoke.[LNB]79 Beattie's afternoon is over as he is replaced by Richard Cresswell.[LNB]77 I almost spoke too soon as Manucho glances a header over the bar. A few Hull fans are beginning to head for the exit. Their team has no Plan B.[LNB]75 That is game over for Hull, I would say. I do not see where they are going to get one goal, let alone two. Stoke's supporters are deafening.[LNB]73 GOAL LAWRENCE (0-2)!!! And what a goal. Lawrence is offered far too much space 25 yards from goal and fires a rasping efforts which even Myhill at full stretch cannot prevent from radaring into the top corner. [LNB]70 Etherington and Ricketts are continuing to test each other. It is the former who comes out on top this time, but his cross is cleared by Turner.[LNB]69 Hull win a corner. The home side are dominant but are still struggling to create genuine opportunities.[LNB]67 Zayatte leaves on the stretcher and Brown decides to introduce Geovanni.[LNB]66 We have a a break in play as Zayatte, carrying a head injury from the first half, appears to have a serious problem. The phyisos are on with a stretcher.[LNB]64 On a rare venture forward, Stoke win a corner as Dawson defends against Lawrence. From the resulting kick, Whelan controls on the edge of the box and hits a deft volley against the post. That would have been curtains for Hull.[LNB]62 There is an eerie feeling around the stadium, almost a sense of the condemned.[LNB]60 Hull use the break in play to make a double change. Garcia and Cousin head off as Bernard Mendy and Manucho enter the fray.[LNB]60 Dawson blasts the free-kick with his left foot but it sails high and wide.[LNB]59 A real chance for Hull as Garcia wins a free-kick from Andy Wilkinson on the edge of the box.[LNB]57 Hull are forcing the issue as Stoke look for counter-attacks. Sorensen is called into action as he plucks a Garcia cross off the head of Cousin.[LNB]56 Tempers are beginning to flare as Lawrence receives a ticking off from referee Webb following a tussle with Fagan. Things are getting a bit feisty.[LNB]54 Hull fans are not impressed with Faye after the Stoke captain produces a double-pike and spiral when down after being fouled, only to immediately get to his feet.[LNB]52 We have a break in play as Zayatte is receiving treatment. It looks like he took a boot to the face.[LNB]50 At the other end, Delap is getting ready to unleash his first trademark long-throw of the match. Fuller flicks on and a Glenn Whelan hits just over the bar.[LNB]49 Barmby is doing his best against a powerful Stoke rearguard and all the signs of his ability are there, but the veteran forward is lacking in physical stature to truly trouble.[LNB]48 Stoke have responded well to Hull's early pressure and Fuller is causing trouble in attack.[LNB]46 The home side are immediately on the attack and Kilbane forces an excellent stop from Sorensen when hitting a half-volley at goal. Stoke clear the resulting corner.[LNB]46 WE'RE BACK!!! Hull get the second half going to very loud support from a screechy lady over my shoulder.[LNB] The betting odds have changed. Hull are now at fives, a draw is 23/10 and Stoke are 4/7.[LNB]HALF-TIME: Stoke go in at the break 1-0 in front thanks to Fuller's scrappy, 41st minute, goal. The strike epitomised a first half lacking real creativity in front of goal, but that was to be expected in a relegation battle. The KC Stadium is nervous. [LNB]45 ADDED TIME: There will be a minimum of one minute added time.[LNB]41 GOAL FULLER (0-1)!!! From the resulting corner, Lawrence delivers and after a scramble at the near post Stoke's number 10 is able to turn and fire in from close range. Myhill had no chance, much to the delight of the very vocal travelling supporters. [LNB]40 Fagan delivers a ball into the Stoke 18-yard area, but all these crosses are playing into the hands of the visitors, who defend and break for Lawrence to win a corner as his deflected effort goes just wide.[LNB]37 With half-time approaching, Stoke appear to have shut up shop and are looking for the interval. Hull are the dominant force, but are lacking a cutting edge.[LNB]36 A Dawson cross finds Cousin, but his volley matches Zayatte has is flies high over Sorensen's crossbar.[LNB]34 Dawson looks like he could have a bit of a problem. He is hobbling, but has signalled to the bench that he is okay.[LNB]32 Hull want a penalty as Shawcross and Barmby meet a cross at the far post. But it is shoulder to shoulder and is essentially Mini-me against My Giant.[LNB]31 Stoke work the ball excellently, but when Lawrence has the chance to cross he can only plant the ball into Myhill's chest. A waste.[LNB]30 Hull want a corner, but Sorensen is barged over the goal line by Fagan when holding the ball. Free-kick Stoke.[LNB]28 The battle between Etherington and Ricketts is proving very interesting. Neither player can be said to be on top, but it is one to keep an eye on.[LNB]26 Lawrence almost produces a moment of magic. Receiving a cross-field pass, the wide-man strikes a first-time effort and, with Boaz Myhill beaten, ripples the wrong side of the roof of the netting.[LNB]25 Barmby finds himself in another mismatch at the back post as he goes for a header against 6'5'' Ryan Shawcross, who I read eats five meals a day. No contest.[LNB]23 Hull win a corner but Zayatte has nothing like the ball control of Garcia as his volley is lucky to still be on KC Stadium premises.[LNB]21 Both sides are building their attacks quite nicely and Richard Garcia has the best chance of the game so far. Following a bit of juggling in the area he volleys at goal, but his effort is gathered by Sorensen.[LNB]19 Kamil Zayatte takes a chance in his own territory when dallying on the ball. Fortunately for the Hull defender, he deflects the ball out for a throw-in off Lawrence.[LNB]18 Hull are settling and Ricketts is exploiting the space behind Etherington. Meanwhile, Fagan wins a corner which Dawson heads behind.[LNB]16 Rory Delap produces a calamitous clearance in his own box as he hooks the ball skywards. Luckily for Stoke, Nick Barmby would need a stepladder to beat Faye in the air.[LNB]14 Beattie is proving a handful for Dawson and is winning everything in the air.[LNB]13 Danger for Hull as Stoke win a free-kick at the byline. Faye is not quite as strong in attack as at the back as his shinned effort from Lawrence's cross goes wide.[LNB]11 Stoke captain Abdoulaye Faye does well to head away.[LNB]11 Hull are finding their feet as Thomas Sorensen is forced to tip Daniel Cousin's header behind for a corner.[LNB]10 Etherington goes in the book for chopping down the advancing Sam Ricketts. Free-kick for Hull wide on the right-hand side of Stoke's box. The delivery is over hit and it is a Potters goal-kick.[LNB]9 Liam Lawrence drives into the Hull box, however, is cross to Ricardo Fuller is cut out by Andy Dawson. Stoke are on top.[LNB]8 Stoke play a quick free-kick and break forward, but Etherington's shot from the edge of the box is weak, low and wide.[LNB]7 Both Pulis and Phil Brown are already prowling their technical areas, a clear indication of the importance of the fixture.[LNB]6 Stoke win a corner, but the short delivery is easily cleared.[LNB]5 Kevin Kilbane does well to get Hull moving forward, but Craig Fagan loses possession and Stoke break. Etherington's cross just eludes James Beattie.[LNB]3 Stoke appear to have the initiative in the early stages and Tony Pulis' players are looking to feed the ball down the left wing to Matthew Etherington when possible.[LNB]1 Early signs of nerves as both sides look a little uncomfortable in possession.[LNB]KICK-OFF!!! Stoke get the game going to a tremendous roar.[LNB] The teams are on the field.[LNB] I thought I was at the KC Stadium, but I seem to have stumbled onto the set of a Hollywood blockbuster as the Personal Address system delivers an incredibly dramatic, "Tigers, tigers burning bright" intro. Steven Spielberg would be proud.[LNB] Ten minutes to kick-off and there is a great atmosphere building.[LNB] This is my first trip to the KC Stadium and I must say I am impressed. East Yorkshire does not always enjoy the best reputation, but Hull's home stadium is very nice indeed and definitely worth a visit if you ever get the chance. There will be no repeat of my recent complaints about a lack of leg room at the Stadium of Light. Let's hope the match is also one to remember. Both sides look focused as they run through their passing drills.[LNB] The spattering of Potters supporters find their voices as their players emerge from the tunnel onto a sun-soaked KC Stadium pitch for their warm-up.[LNB]Referee: Howard Webb[LNB]Stoke team: Sorensen, Wilkinson, Shawcross, Abdoulaye Faye, Cort, Lawrence, Delap, Whelan, Etherington, Beattie, Fuller. Subs: Simonsen, Olofinjana, Cresswell, Pugh, Kelly, Camara, Sonko.[LNB]Hull team: Myhill, Ricketts, Turner, Zayatte, Dawson, Garcia, Boateng, Kilbane, Barmby, Fagan, Cousin. Subs: Duke, Geovanni, Hughes, Mendy, Halmosi, Marney, Manucho.[LNB] If you fancy a flutter, Hull are 11/10 with the bookies, a draw is at 12/5 and so is a Stoke win. A pretty good bet back in October could have been a couple of quid on Hull to go down...[LNB] This one really is too tight to call. Hull will know that defeat and a victory for either Newcastle or Middlesbrough in Monday's Tyne-Tees derby could see them dragged into the drop zone. Stoke, however, should probably be safe with a win in East Yorkshire. It promises to be a classic May, relegation dog fight.[LNB] This game is being billed as one of the biggest in the history of last season's Championship winners, Hull, and the players snubbed a free trip to races during the week in order to remain focused. I wonder if steering clear of the gee-gees will have any impact.[LNB] We will bring you all of the team news as soon as it is in. Meanwhile, Hull desperately need a win. They have recorded only two in the top flight since the end of October and are sinking like a stone. Stoke, though, are wretched on the road and have only seven away Premier League points to their name.[LNB] After making my way to Hull by train via the full-of-life destinations of Howden, Gilberdyke and Brough... I'm expecting a real, rough and ready scrap at the KC Stadium. Both teams are in need of the points and let's just say this is likely to be one for the purists.[LNB] Welcome to our live commentary of the crucial Premier League relegation clash between Hull City and Stoke City.[LNB]
