Hull City 2 Sheffield Utd 1: Blackwell fury as bounce favours Hull

27 February 2009 01:44
Kevin Blackwell launched an astonishing outburst after controversial refereeing decisions cost his Sheffield United side a place in the quarter-finals and allowed Hull [LNB]to progress to that stage for the first time in 38 years. [LNB]Hull went 1-0 up in the 25th minute, courtesy of a Kyle Naughton own goal, with referee Peter Walton giving a goal even though the ball did not cross the line. [LNB] Angry man: Kevin Blackwell makes his point to the officials at the final whistle[LNB]The incident was replayed on the big screen and Hull boss Phil Brown admitted Walton's error should not have been shown because 'it could have started a riot'.[LNB] Shortly before half-time, Sheffield United were also denied a penalty, with the score at 1-1, as Kamil Zayatte fouled Billy Sharp. That's a disgrace. Managers lose their jobs over that. [LNB]'That's what they don't understand. I've got a family and kids. They can stand there and try to persuade me until I'm blue in the face: that's not a goal.' [LNB]Naughton said: 'I just thought it was play on. I don't think the referee gave it. It was the linesman.' [LNB]Hull had dominated the first half an hour. Dean Marney produced a defence-splitting pass for Peter Halmosi, who was tripped on the edge of the box by Naughton, leading to a booking for the United right back. [LNB]But Naughton was about to become involved in a greater drama. Nick Barmby cushioned the ball back for Nathan Doyle, who hit a diagonal pass 40 yards into the penalty area. [LNB] Finishing touch: Halmosi beats Paddy Kenny to score the winner[LNB]Defender Naughton, on the edge of the six-yard box, headed back towards his own goal and the ball struck the bar, appeared to bounce down onto the line and then clipped the bar again before bouncing away. As confusion reigned, referee Walton signalled a goal for Hull. [LNB]Sheffield United quickly recovered from that setback and equalised. David Cotterill threaded the ball to the right wing, where Greg Halford put in a deep cross towards the back post. Lee Hendrie headed the ball across the face of goal and Sharp was waiting to steer in from close range. [LNB]Hull's defence shook during the remainder of the half, with Zayatte carelessly letting one cross go through his legs. Then the centre half was lucky to escape after sending Sharp tumbling. [LNB]But Hull calmed things down after half-time and went in front again in the 56th minute as Doyle picked out the run of Barmby on the right wing. The veteran forward curled in a low cross to the near post and Halmosi in the six-yard box applied a neat finishing touch. [LNB]After that, Sheffield United struggled for a breakthrough as Hull looked forward to the next round at Arsenal or Burnley. [LNB]Although Hull were helped by decisions last night, Brown argued: 'The boot has been on the other foot many times this season.'
