Hull 2 Wolves 2: Tigers down after Jarvis hauls McCarthy's men level

If Hull are among the three teams relegated to the Championship at the end of the season, they may regret the day they failed to take advantage of the most charitable of gifts. [LNB]They twice led this crucial bottom-of-the-table clash and twice contrived to throw away their advantages, stretching their run without a league win to nine matches. [LNB]A more significant measure of their standard of defence was the fact that Wolves had failed to score in their four previous matches.[LNB] Level pegging: Matt Jarvis celebrates the equaliser[LNB] Jan Vennegoor of Hesselink and Stephen Hunt, with a penalty against the side he could have been playing for had Hull accepted their opponents' £4million offer, were on target for the home side but an Anthony Gardner own goal and another from Matt Jarvis ensured the game ended level.[LNB] From Hull manager Phil Brown there was disappointment at twice conceding the lead. 'We gave away two sloppy goals - a draw was probably a fair result,' he said. [LNB]The Hull boss expressed his hope that Hunt would be staying at the club, adding: 'If it was Wolves' intention to unnerve him, it didn't work. He showed today what a good player he is.' [LNB]Vennegoor of Hesselink's two previous efforts this season helped Hull achieve maximum points in crucial games against Wigan Athletic and Stoke City. [LNB]This one, in the context of a relegation dogfight that is gathering momentum, would have been arguably even more important had Hull achieved a semblance of solidarity at the back. In truth, they floundered like netted fish. [LNB] [LNB] Jan's the man: Jan Vennegoor of Hesselink celebrates his goal [LNB]Wolves just about edged the opening skirmishes in a match that, predictably, was short on quality. But what it lacked in finesse it made up in effort and commitment and it was a combination of those qualities which led to Hull grabbing a precious sixth-minute lead. [LNB]Jozy Altidore muscled his way through a challenge from Christophe Berra before he rolled a neat square ball to Vennegoor of Hesselink, who hit a crisp left-foot shot wide of Wolves goalkeeper Marcus Hahnemann's despairing dive. [LNB]It was an advantage that Hull never allowed themselves to rest easily on. Their defending at set-pieces, particularly corners, was shameful. Berra came within a hair's breadth of equalising when Kevin Foley headed on Stephen Ward's corner in the 25th minute but somewhow Hull rode their luck until three minutes after the break when they cracked once too often.[LNB] [LNB] In vain: Boaz Myhill fails to reach a deflected shot by Wolverhampton Wanderers' Ronald Zubar off Anthony Gardner [LNB] By any standards, Gardner reached the height of carelessness when he swung a lazy left boot at Ronald Zubar's cross and sent the ball spinning over Bo Myhill's head and into the net. [LNB]Back came Hull and Hunt restored their lead within five minutes when he crashed the ball home from the penalty spot after Zubar was penalised for bundling over Altidore.[LNB] It was a present which Hull scorned in the 67th minute with more abysmal defending. They failed to clear a Foley cross and then compounded their errors when Myhill failed to reach Jarvis's scrambled shot. [LNB]Mick McCarthy had no argument with the penalty decision but insisted his team had the chances to win. [LNB]'When you come from behind twice, you may be happy with a point but I felt we should have had three,' said the Wolves manager.[LNB] McCarthy says Hunt is up to it as Wolves boss lines up £5m bid Celtic beat Hull and West Brom to sign Fulham's Diomansy Kamara on loanHULL CITY FC
