Out of the game: Dowie's last job was as assistant to Alan Shearer (right) at Newcastle[LNB]Iain Dowie has emerged as the leading contender to replace Phil Brown as manager of Hull.   [LNB]The Tigers parted company with Brown on Monday after a run of four successive defeats which left them second bottom of the Barclays Premier League.   [LNB]Saturday's last-gasp 2-1 home defeat to Arsenal left them three points from safety with nine games to go.   [LNB]Chairman Adam Pearson revealed last night there were 'about five' managers on the shortlist for the job and the club were probably looking to appoint someone on a deal until the end of the season.   [LNB]'Things are moving forward,' Pearson told the Tigers' official website. [LNB]'What happens when a manager leaves is that, suddenly, you get some interesting enquiries from left-field and they have to be considered.[LNB]'We've got a pretty tight list and we're working through it. Our intention is to have somebody in place for the weekend game at Portsmouth.[LNB]'We're working through this exercise as quickly as we can, but obviously we want to explore every possibility.[LNB]'I think all the names mentioned (in the media) are pretty reasonable. There are a few who the press haven't picked up on yet that we're talking to and it's always nice to have a couple of secret ones tucked away.[LNB]'I think we'll be able to bring that to the fore over the next couple of days.'[LNB]Former Charlton and Crystal Palace boss Dowie appears to be the most likely choice.[LNB]  The 45-year-old has had stints in charge of Coventry and QPR since his ill-fated spell as coach of the Addicks came to an end in November 2006, while he has most recently worked on the coaching staff at Newcastle.  [LNB]Sportsmail has learned that the Hull board first made moves to find Brown's replacement last week, but former Manchester City manager Mark Hughes turned down an approach, as did former Wigan boss Paul Jewell, who worked with Pearson at Derby County.[LNB]Gary Megson, Sean O'Driscoll and Alan Curbishley have also been linked with the post.[LNB] Hull hope Hughes falls to temptation in quest to replace sacked boss BrownThe 2009/10 managerial merry-go-round: Brown becomes 33rd exitVIDEO SPECIAL: Jimmy Bullard comes clean ... in spoof shampoo advertWho will be the new Hull boss?
