Hull striker Mark Cullen has revealed his rejection by Newcastle provided the spur to fight for a career in football.[LNB] The 18-year-old Ashington-born frontman, who scored his first senior goal for the club in his second Premier League appearance at Wigan on Monday, was released by the Magpies after seven years at the age of 14.[LNB]However, that disappointment has simply served to fuel his desire to make it in the game.[LNB]He told the Hull Daily Mail: "I got released by Newcastle when I was 14, and that was a big disappointment at the time.[LNB]"It was my hometown club and they had been the only club I had ever wanted to play for.[LNB]"But you just have to keep going when you get a rejection like that and thankfully, Hull City have given me a big chance.[LNB]"Things like that can make you stronger. I can remember feeling really down when it happened, but my grandparents up in the north-east kept me going, and here I am."[LNB]Used as a defender at Newcastle, Cullen joined the Tigers on a summer trial in 2008 and won a scholarship and, having returned to his accustomed attacking role, has impressed at youth and reserve team level.[LNB]He signed a two-year deal last month and made his league debut against Sunderland on April 24.[LNB]Cullen said: "I didn't really see my chance coming this year.[LNB]"I started the season as a youth team player and just thought that all I could do was try my best in the youth team, score a few goals and get a contract at the end of the season.[LNB]"It's happened a lot faster than that and I'm just pleased to see how things have gone.[LNB]"I want to play as many games as I can for the club now and get a few goals under my belt to get us back in the Premier League next season."
