Cairney looks to build on goal

Hull youngster Tom Cairney is hoping Tuesday night's impressive debut is merely the start of a successful Tigers career. The 18-year-old midfielder set Hull on their way to an ultimately convincing 3-1 win over Southend in the second round of the Carling Cup with a stunning goal after just seven minutes. Cairney picked up possession on the edge of the area and calmly lobbed goalkeeper Steve Mildenhall with his left foot. The youth team graduate is unlikely to force his way into the reckoning for a Premier League start just yet but should have given manager Phil Brown food for thought. Cairney said: "I got the ball on the edge of the box and shot and luckily it went into the top corner. I was over the moon when I saw it hit the net and I just ran away to the bench to celebrate. "I thought about the pass because there was a player on my left and I could have taken the easy option. But I fancied taking the shot on and, like I said, luckily it found the net. It was the best moment of my short career so far."
