Cairney eyes cup run
Hull City teenager Tom Cairney hopes his debut goal against Southend in the Carling Cup is the first of many for The Tigers.
The 18-year-old scored the opening goal of Hull's 3-1 win over The Shrimpers after just seven minutes as they progressed to the third round.
The midfielder cheekily lobbed Steve Mildenhall in the Southend goal to spark an ultimately comfortable win for the home side, and he was ecstatic to net so soon into his debut.
"I got the ball on the edge of the box and shot and luckily it went into the top corner," Cairney said.
"I was over the moon when I saw it hit the net and I just ran away to the bench to celebrate.
"I thought about the pass because there was a player on my left and I could have taken the easy option.
"But I fancied taking the shot on and, like I said, luckily it found the net. It was the best moment of my short career so far."
Manager Phil Brown made 11 changes for the match as goals from Jozy Altidore and Geovanni ensured their progression to the next round. Cairney is hoping for more opportunities to shine in the competition.
Cairney said: "It's a big opportunity for players like me and a few of the other young boys. We just got told to express ourselves and that is what we did.
"I'm hoping for a cup run or to get in a few Premier League squads. We've got a strong squad but I've got to keep learning and training."
Cairney was rejected by Leeds United just two years ago after they decided he was too small for professional football, now the youngster is delighted to have ended up at the KC Stadium.
"At 16 Leeds told me I was too small to play for them," he said.
"They said they didn't have the time to wait for me to grow.
"Hull brought me in, luckily, and it turned out to be the best move I ever made. In two years I've shot up and kicked on from there."
