Ben Watson gives Wigan late victory

On this occasion, rather than the alleged actions of Arsenal's Cesc Fabregas, it was a late winner from Ben Watson that left them feeling aggrieved.[LNB]Not that there was anything untoward with Watson's second goal in as many games, neatly lobbed into an unguarded net with six minutes remaining after goalkeeper Matt Duke had applied an ineffectual punch to Mario Melchiot's long throw.[LNB] Related ArticlesPremier League action[LNB]Latest standings and statistics[LNB]Wigan's Ben Watson scores the winner against Hull City[LNB]FA seek Hull response after to Arsenal's Cesc Fabregas accused of spitting[LNB]Hull fury at William Gallas offside goal as Arsenal reach FA Cup semi-finals[LNB]Fans' frustration boils over as Arsenal fire more blanks[LNB]This time, it was more a sense of frustration rather than injustice felt by Phil Brown at the incapability of his side to hang on for a point that could have proved more than useful in their quest to avoid relegation. As it is, a run of one victory from 14 league games leaves them just four points above the relegation zone. A nervy last two months of the campaign awaits.[LNB]Chris Kirkland kept out Hull's clearest opening, a glancing Alberto Manucho header just after the break, and Brown admitted: 'It was a cruel finish to the game. It's something we need to learn from because there was a point or maybe even three to be had from this game because I thought we were getting to grips with Wigan.'[LNB]These sides are heading in opposite directions, and victory pushes Wigan past the 40-point barrier to secure their continued tenure in the top flight, an achievement from a club of similar stature to their own that Brown reflected his side could do well to learn from.[LNB]The win would have been more emphatic had not Hugo Rodallega's late header hit the woodwork, but rather than reflect on a job well done, Steve Bruce is insistent his side pushes on in pursuit of a top-seven finish which could bring with it qualification for Europe.[LNB]With a little more luck in front of goal, which will undoubtedly come with experience, former Crystal Palace midfielder Watson could have been celebrating a hat-trick. Mido, with two glaring first-half misses, was even more palpable in not boosting Wigan's goal difference further.[LNB]Bruce is expecting an imminent phone call from Palace chairman Simon Jordan, who sanctioned the midfielder Watson's move to the North-West in January. 'At £1.5 million Ben really does look like a snip,' the Wigan manager enthused. 'I'm sure Simon Jordan will be on the phone soon accusing me of doing him.'[LNB]
