Tempers flare in derby draw

Published: 12 Feb 2011 - 19:00:07

Oldham midfielder Aiden White was twice denied a winner in the space of a minute in a goalless derby draw at Huddersfield. The Latics defender, on loan from Leeds, was first denied in the 48th minute by a brilliant save by Town goalkeeper Ian Bennett, who was making his 500th career appearance, and then saw a shot cleared off the line by Terriers skipper Peter Clarke just seconds later when Oldham romped forward again. The closest Huddersfield came - Town are now unbeaten in eight league matches - was when Anthony Pilkington's misplaced cross inadvertently hit the post in the 64th minute.Referee Andy Woolmer infuriated home fans for not sending off Oldham's Reuben Hazel, who had already been booked, for a bad first-half foul on Huddersfield striker Alan Lee.Oldham's Reuben Reid, also booked, should have been sent off for a deliberate handball in the second half, while Town's Jamie McCombe was booked for protesting about Reid not getting a second yellow.Players from both sides squared up to each other at half-time and midway through the second half as an often tempestuous encounter threatened to boil over.
