Wolfsburg 'keen to lure David Wagner from Huddersfield'

Huddersfield head coach David Wagner has been targeted by struggling Bundesliga side Wolfsburg, according to reports in Germany.

The West Yorkshire club have refused to comment on the speculation, and Press Association Sport understands Wolfsburg have made no approach to the Sky Bet Championship side, who currently sit fourth in the table.

German newspaper Bild claims Wolfsburg's current head coach Valerien Ismael will take charge of his final game on Tuesday, against Borussia Monchengladbach, with the Lower Saxony team then heading into a winter break.

Frenchman Ismael, 41, was only appointed on a permanent basis in November after replacing Dieter Hecking, who was sacked in October.

Ismael steered Wolfsburg to victory at Freiburg in his first game in charge, but Saturday's home win against Eintracht Frankfurt followed four games without success.

Wolfsburg have won only three of their 15 league games so far this season and lie one place and a point above the relegation zone.

Wagner, 44, was a surprise choice to succeed Chris Powell at the John Smith's Stadium in November 2015.

The former Borussia Dortmund reserve-team coach, who had worked under good friend and former Mainz team-mate Jurgen Klopp, steered the Terriers to safety in the Championship last season.

Wagner, also linked with the Aston Villa vacancy in October before Steve Bruce was given the job, completely overhauled his playing squad in the summer.

He made 13 new signings and has quickly turned Huddersfield into play-off challengers.
