The 27-year-old defender quit the Blues for Huddersfield last week, but will visit Roots Hall with his new team-mates on August 8.
"It is very strange the way things have worked out," he told Southend's official website.
"Of all the teams we could have played first we got Southend, but in a way it's going to be like nothing has changed for me.
"It will be another game at Roots Hall, but obviously I will be in a different shirt this time and I must remember to go into a different changing room too.
"Hopefully I will get a decent reception from the Southend fans."
