Holland retained their Under-17 European football title here on Wednesday as they beat old foes Germany 5-4 on penalties after the game ended 1-1.

The Dutch and the Germans have met in three of the last four finals - Germany winning the 2009 edition - and were evenly matched throughout this encounter.

The Germans took the lead through skipper Leon Goretzka's header in the first minute of the second-half and held out all through the second period only to be left shaking their heads as the Dutch levelled in the first minute of time added on through Elton Acolatse.

The penalty shootout was just as tight and it was Germany's Marc Stendera who was the only one to miss out and hand the title to the Dutch.
