Murray aiming for European spot

Mixu Paatelainen's side take on struggling St Mirren on Monday evening, knowing victory would put them in a strong position to finish above mid-table rivals Motherwell and in the top half of the Scottish Premier League after next weekend's split. Hibernian are only seven points behind Aberdeen and Dundee United, who are sharing fourth place, and would have a chance to close that gap if they manage to squeeze into the final group among the league's elite. Although Murray admits securing sixth place is the priority, he claims Hibernian have also not still given up on finishing in the top four and playing in Europe next term. He said: "We're only seven points behind with a game in hand. "If we do get into the top six we have the chance to go around and play these teams again. "There's no reason why we can't close that gap. "It is tight and there are a lot of scenarios that can still pan out. The only team who are safe as well as the Old Firm at the moment is Hearts. "If you look at our record against Aberdeen and Hearts this season they have yet to beat us in the league. It is so tight. "We've let ourselves down badly against the lesser teams. We drew with Falkirk here, we drew with Motherwell here. "The league is so tight and with a little bit of luck going one way you can easily win or lose games." Murray claims Hibernian should have had a top-six position secured long before now. He added: "It is in our hands and it has been for the last few weeks. "A mixture of bad luck and some poor finishing and maybe some slack defending has cost us over the past few weeks. "It's all ifs and buts I suppose. But we should have beaten Aberdeen and Dundee United and we would be sitting fourth right now. "The fact is we're not at the moment, but I think our performances over the last two or three months have been fairly decent and we have shown we are capable of putting a good run together."
