Hughes desperate to make mark

The 44-year-old quit Falkirk for the Edinburgh club following the surprise resignation of Mixu Paatelainen at the end of last month. Hughes had also been linked with a move to Swansea, with Roberto Martinez expected to join Wigan in the coming days. However, it was another of his former clubs which lured the ex-defender from the Bairns, having spent four years at Hibs as a player. "This is a very proud day for me," he told Hibs' official website. "I am delighted to be the manager of Hibernian. Everyone knows what Hibernian means to me. "I have so much respect for the club and its supporters that I would not have accepted the job if I did not think that I could make a real difference and be successful. "It is important to me that the board have identified my managerial ability, and not my history as a Hibernian player, as the reason I have been appointed." The Falkirk board will meet tonight in a bid to appoint Hughes' successor "as soon as possible". Chairman Martin Ritchie told Falkirk's website: "Over the last six years John has played a major part in the development of the club. "John's successor will inherit a highly successful football academy producing first-team players like Darren Barr, Scott Arfield and Thomas Scobbie, our first-class training facilities at Stirling University and, of course, a team which performed so well in the cup final. "The search for a new manager starts now. With our first Europa League qualifier on July 16, we will want to have our new manager in place as soon as possible." Managing director George Craig added: "John has been an inspirational manager at Falkirk and we thank him for all that he has done for the club. "We are sorry to see him leave but pleased for John on a personal level that he is joining a club which means so much to him."
