Hughes calls for support

Hibernian manager John Hughes has told supporters the team needs their backing as they look to overturn NK Maribor's 3-0 advantage in the Europa League.

Even though the new East Stand will not be used this evening, Hibs are expecting a big crowd through the turnstiles. The Hibs fans that watched their team beaten 1-0 in Sunday's friendly at Carlisle vented their frustration at the performance but Hughes insists the team needs their support tonight if they are to have any hope of staying in the competition.

He said: "The fans booing at Carlisle inspires me.I don't think I have to give the fans a message. One thing I wouldn't do is patronise the fans, that would be disrespectful."

He added: "I think the fans know their stuff. Yes, we're all exasperated; yes, we want to win every football match.

"But what I will say to them is I'm trying to do it in a manner that I think they want to see and that is by playing good football.

"I saw a real dose of it last year, we played some right good stuff, and the fans just have to be patient.

"European nights at Easter Road are absolutely magnificent and that can be an inspiration in its own right.

"I just say to the supporters, 'get behind us, cheer us on' and hopefully we can go and do it.

"It's going to be an almighty ask but just look at Liverpool a few years ago scoring three goals in six minutes to turn the tie on its head and going on to win the Champions League.

"Anything is possible in football."
