Hughes already planning winter buys

Hughes saw his best chance of securing silverware in his first season in charge of Hibs go up in smoke with the defeat to St Johnstone - his second since being appointed manager of his boyhood idols. But he assured the Easter Road faithful he was hurting even more than they were, insisting such losses were much more painful than those he suffered while Falkirk boss. "Definitely, certainly - it kills you," he said. "But you just need to roll with it, take it on the chin, be bigger and better." Apologising to his fellow fans, he added: "Let me tell you, none of them will be hurting as much as me." Asked what was needed to prevent a repeat of Tuesday's result, Hughes said: "I'd like to think I could go and get one or two better players when the window opens up. "But I'll never give up on these guys. "I think I've got some really good players at my club and it's up to me to get the best out of them." Until then, Hughes is warning fans to expect a season of highs and lows as Hibs try to hang on to third place in the SPL. He said: "I know what I've got at my disposal and it's going to be a rollercoaster ride. "Will that bring us victories? Yes it will. "But will we also get beaten every now and again? Yes we will." Hughes' next assignment is Saturday's SPL trip to in-form Motherwell, who are unbeaten domestically this season. The Hibs boss reacted to his side's first defeat of the campaign - at Hamilton 11 days ago - by dropping captain Chris Hogg for last weekend's 3-0 league win over St Johnstone. He picked the same XI on Tuesday and had not decided today whether to give those players a chance to make amends or wield the axe again. "I'll sit and think about it," he said. "I think we let ourselves down the other night there - that was evident. "I'll give them the opportunity possibly of going to rectify it but I've got three or four other ones who are banging on the door to say, 'Come on, it's about time I got a chance'." Motherwell 6/5, Draw 9/4, Hibernian 12/5
