Honesty the way forward - Calderwood
Hibs boss Colin Calderwood says an honest appraisal from himself and his players is the best approach to overcome a hard start to his reign.[LNB] Hibs lost their third consecutive match since Calderwood took over when Hearts ruined his Easter Road debut by securing a 2-0 SPL win.[LNB]The chances are the run of defeats will be extended on Wednesday as Calderwood takes his team to Ibrox to play leaders Rangers, who have taken 31 points from a possible 33 this season.[LNB]But Calderwood was encouraged by his players' response to his post-match analysis and their reaction to some home truths.[LNB]The former Nottingham Forest manager was disappointed with the lack of pressure put on Hearts after David Templeton and Stephen Elliott put the visitors 2-0 up with goals that frustrated the former Scotland defender.[LNB]"You have got to review the game," Calderwood said.[LNB]"I looked at it on Sunday night and you become doubly frustrated with the goals against.[LNB]"We went through it with the players and let everyone know what is expected in certain situations - improvement all round.[LNB]"In our good bits we have got to be better and in our bad bits we have got to be hugely improved.[LNB]"It's a real education. There is a recurring theme where we concede goals that we can really address."[LNB]Calderwood insists there is no benefit in veering away from necessary criticism, just because his relationship with his players is in its early stages.[LNB]"I think it's important, whether it be criticism or praise, that you are honest and there is a consistency about it," he said.[LNB]"Words spoken at the end of a game are sometimes heated because of the situation. You have got to make sure what you say to the players is factually correct.[LNB]"Sometimes you state it blatantly honestly and when they look back on it, it becomes obvious. The words are only there to improve us.[LNB]"We have had quite a good morning because you might as well get it out in the open.[LNB]"You have to let everyone know where we all stand and almost have an open forum, because they have got to give feedback.[LNB]"They are the ones at the sharp end and what we see might not necessarily be the case. That's where you have got to have debate."[LNB]Calderwood has spoken to Derek Riordan about his 88th-minute red card for a knee-high challenge on Rudi Skacel.[LNB]Riordan, who was wearing the captain's armband, will miss the Ibrox visit and may receive a further suspension depending on the number of disciplinary points awarded against him for the straight red card.[LNB]"It has been addressed," Calderwood said. "He knows where we stand on it.[LNB]"I spoke to him about (the captaincy) as well. He is man enough to accept that it was the wrong thing to do and at the point that it happened the situation was almost irreversible. That adds insult to injury."[LNB]
