Hibs Sunshine On Leith chart campaign kick's off today

31 May 2010 13:05
Get downloading!!! A campaign by Hibs supporters, to get the club's unofficial anthem, Sunshine on Leith, by the Proclaimers, in to the official UK top 40 kicks off today. All this was dreamed up by Hibs fan Callum Laidlaw, to coincide with the 20th anniversary of the "Hands off Hibs" campaign. 20 years ago then Hearts owner Wallace Mercer attempted to take over and destroy the Hibees, who had built up a massive debt. Mercer wanted to merge Hibs and Hearts, but many believe he wanted to wipe Hibs from the football map, while Hearts lived on. "Hands off Hibs" was started in protest, and was sucessful at helping keep the club alive, when current owner Tom Farmer came to the rescue at the 11th hour. The Proclaimers are playing a special gig at Edinburgh's Usher Hall to mark the anniversary of the successful campaign next week, and it's hoped this will coincide with Sunshine on Leith back in the charts. When it was first released it hit no.41 in the official UK charts, hopefully it will do better this time. It's hoped that fans will purchase the song at some point this week, which can be downloaded for as little as 89p from Amazon, and hopefully it will chart in next week's top 40. The campaign organisers are hoping to reach at least 5,000 downloads, with the Proclaimers giving all proceeds to charity. A number of celebrities are backing the campaign, including radio dj Grant Stott, Hollywood actor Dougray Scott and Little Britain actor Matt Lucas, who is a huge fan of the band. C'Mon folks, get downloading the song, all proceeds are going to a good cause, and it could also see SOL back in the charts.
