Hibs forced to settle for third in Championship play-off race

Hibernian will have to do it the hard way if they are to reclaim their place in the Ladbrokes Championship after being pipped to second place by Falkirk.

Alan Stubbs' side went into their final game of the campaign against Queen of the South level on points with the Bairns.

But his side's inferior goal difference meant their chances of leapfrogging Peter Houston's team were always slim and they will now have to play two extra games against Raith Rovers if they are to gain promotion.

Hibs did their best to put the pressure on their rivals, beating the Doonhamers 2-0 at Easter Road thanks to Niklas Gunnarsson's close-range effort and a Jason Cummings header.

But defender Paul Watson ensured there was no Falkirk slip-up as he fired home against Morton to hand his side the 1-0 home win which confirmed they finish as runners-up to Rangers.

Hibs will face Rovers on Wednesday night in the first leg of their play-off quarter-final ahead of Saturday's Easter Road return, with Falkirk lying in wait for the winners.

The team which emerges from the semi-final will take on the team finishing 11th in the Premiership for a place in next year's top flight.
