Hibs boss joins call for overhaul

In January, Scottish Football Association chief executive Gordon Smith revealed the system will come under scrutiny at the end of the season after Hearts and Falkirk expressed criticism earlier this term following failed red-card appeals. Paatelainen has now joined the chorus of unhappy voices after the club's failure to overturn Chris Hogg's recent dismissal. The defender has been ruled out of Thursday night's Edinburgh derby after referee Stevie O'Reilly stood by his decision to send the player off in Saturday's 2-1 Scottish Premier League defeat to Dundee United following a review of the incident. The failed appeal adds to Paatelainen's massive selection concerns for the Gorgie game, with captain Rob Jones, Sol Bamba and Colin Nish already banned and other players struggling with injury. The Finn felt the club had a good chance of freeing Hogg to play and, having failed, now feels an independent panel should review match incidents rather than the referee. Paatelainen said: "I think it should go to an independent panel immediately, totally and utterly. "I would recommend that process of appeal should be looked at. If there was a case to change it, it should be considered. "We felt it (the red card) was quite harsh. Everybody agreed, Craig Levein agreed and even the player agreed it was a very, very strong decision by the referee. I thought we had an excellent chance of winning it." Hearts defender Lee Wallace has called on the club's supporters to act as a 12th man. The former Scotland Under-21 player believes the Gorgie faithful have been pivotal in making Tynecastle a fortress this season. Ahead of the televised encounter, Hearts had lost just two of their 17 SPL home matches, accumulating 35 points in the process. It was a different story last year during their embarrassing eighth-placed finish when the club's fans made their feeling clear. And Wallace, who is hopeful of recovering from a virus that ruled him out of Sunday's 2-0 defeat at Rangers, insists the supporters have an important part to play as Hearts bid to keep their charge for third place on course. He said: "It's a massive game, it's the Edinburgh derby, it's a night game, so the atmosphere will be huge with the fans getting behind us. "With the fans at Tynecastle, the atmosphere is incredible for a derby match. "I think everyone knows that and there will be an extra bit of adrenalin being pumped through us with the fans. "The manager has got a lot of players playing with confidence again and that's been a massive part, especially at home where we have won a lot of games. "It is intimidating for teams at Tynecastle; I think every team in the SPL will tell you that, with the fans being so close to the pitch. "It can be intimidating for us but, at the same time, you just have to get on with your job. "You know the fans have got a right to voice their opinion or whatever but it's just a case of concentrating on the pitch, doing well and helping your team-mates when they're down." Hearts 4/5, Draw 11/5, Hibernian 10/3
