Hibs appoint Brown as caretaker boss

Scottish Premier League strugglers Hibernian on Monday appointed assistant manager Billy Brown as caretaker coach to fill in before a permanent successor to Colin Calderwood is found.

Calderwood, sacked on Sunday after only 12 months in charge at Easter Road, paid the price for a poor run of results culminating in Saturday's 1-0 home defeat against Dunfermline.

Pressure from angry fans forced the board to act.

A statement on the club's official website read: "Billy Brown will take on first team duties in an interim capacity whilst the recruitment process for a new manager is completed.

"Brown will take full control of the squad over the international break as they prepare for the fixture versus Kilmarnock on 19 November.

"The recruitment process for the new manager began this morning and is being led by executive director Scott Lindsay and managing director Fife Hyland.

"The board is now focused on speaking with shareholders at the Annual General Meeting tomorrow evening.

"No further comment will be made on the recruitment process until after the AGM."

Former Hearts number two Brown, 60, had been recruited as Calderwood's assistant in September.

After the Dunfermline loss, which left Hibs one point off the bottom of the table, a group of supporters protested outside the club's stadium to demand the departure of former Nottingham Forest boss Calderwood and chairman Rod Petrie.

Calderwood won just 12 of his 49 matches as Hibs boss and speculation over his future had been building ahead of Tuesday's club AGM.

He took over at Easter Road following John Hughes's sacking last October.
