Fenlon targets win at Well

Hibernian manager Pat Fenlon hopes for a happier conclusion to Friday night's game at Motherwell than in the corresponding fixture in December. Last December, in Fenlon's first game in charge, Hibs led 1-0 at Motherwell when an electrical fire forced the game to be abandoned. In the next five matches Hibs claimed a solitary point in a season where they fought against relegation. "Hopefully it finishes this time; the last time wasn't great," Fenlon said. "There's nothing we could do about it. It was out with anybody's control. "It probably summed up, a little bit, the luck we were getting at the club at the time. "We've made progress. We're happy with the progress we've made. "If we can go to Motherwell and win it will be a big plus for us because they are a very, very decent outfit." Hibs could return to second in the table with victory over the Steelmen, who Fenlon believes will be the closest challengers to Celtic this term along with Dundee United. Fenlon is eager for his side to bounce back from the 3-2 loss at Ross County last weekend. "After losing the game last week you want to get back playing as soon as possible," he added. "I don't think it's a reality check. I wasn't getting carried away with the start we had. We did all right. "We've had a half-decent start to the season, nothing more than that, and the league (table) shows that. "We need to defend better as a team. If teams are going to score against us we need to make them work harder for it than we did last week. "From an attacking point of view I'm more than pleased with what we've been doing. If we can shut up shop a little bit more I firmly believe we can win a fair few games." Former Motherwell defender Tim Clancy missed the trip to Dingwall with a groin problem but could return at the expense of Alan Maybury after training today. Fenlon added: "He (Clancy) is a good player, a good pro. It's been good to have him back, because we don't have big numbers, particularly defensively." Clancy could join Northern Ireland international Ryan McGivern in defence. McGivern said: "After our last defeat (at Aberdeen) we bounced straight back, here against Dundee. "That's something we're looking to do again tomorrow night, bounce back straight after a defeat. "As a defender, I know we're shipping too many goals. Last week we conceded three goals that could easily have been avoided. "It's something we've been working on in training. We know they're not massive errors, they're simple things we all know we can cut out. "We know we're always going to score goals with the attackers we have, so hopefully once we start keeping a few more clean sheets we'll get a few more wins."
