Fans won't shed tears over Hughes exit

The majority of Hibernian fans were happy to see John Hughes' tenure as manager come to an end on Monday.[LNB] That is the view of Mike Riley, chairman of the Hibernian Supporters Association, who believes the Easter Road faithful had lost patience with their beleaguered boss.[LNB]The Edinburgh club confirmed this morning they had parted company with Hughes by mutual consent, just days after their 2-0 loss to St Johnstone extended their run to just one win in 10 competitive matches this season.[LNB]"I think the general consensus in the Hibs supporters club on Sunday was that most people wanted him to leave," Riley said.[LNB]"The results haven't been good enough and most of the fans had lost patience.[LNB]"It's very difficult. I didn't want John Collins to leave, I didn't want Mixu Paatelainen to leave and I didn't want John Hughes to leave.[LNB]"We can't keep changing managers all the time but I think the manager had maybe lost the dressing room a bit and the players were not playing for him.[LNB]"Maybe we could have waited to see how the Kilmarnock game went and a win might have kickstarted something but the majority of the fans had already lost patience."[LNB]Riley believes Hughes' successor should be judged solely on their managerial CV, rather than looking for candidates with a previous Hibs connection.[LNB]Hibs have had eight managers in the last 10 years, with the last three - John Collins, Mixu Paatelainen and Hughes - all former players.[LNB]"Hibs might need to change their policy," said Riley.[LNB]"We have had managers who were tremendous players for Hibs but maybe it's time now to move in a different direction and look for another Tony Mowbray.[LNB]"We heard a rumour 10 days ago about Jimmy Calderwood, he is available but I'm not sure he would be a popular choice.[LNB]"The club might also look at the likes of Billy Reid or Gus MacPherson.[LNB]"But the fans are fickle, if we win they'll be fine, if we lose games they won't be happy. It's a hell of a job."[LNB]Riley believes club chiefs must move quickly to appoint a new boss, adding: "We don't want to be unsettled for too long."
