Clarets boss closes in on Fletcher

Manager Owen Coyle was beginning talks with Scotland striker Fletcher on Tuesday after being given permission to speak to him. Fletcher and his representatives have travelled to Turf Moor to discuss personal terms. The 22-year-old, who has three full caps for Scotland, scored 52 goals in 137 starts during his time at Easter Road. One report claimed that a fee of around £2.8million, rising to £3.5million, had been agreed, depending on appearances and performances. Fletcher has four years of his contract to run and new Hibs manager John Hughes hoped he would stay. Celtic failed to secure his services in January and Fletcher has indicated he would like further his career in England's top flight. The Premier League new boys however have been less succesful in their pursuit of midfielder McCarthy. Coyle is understood by Sky Sports to have tabled a bid in the region of £750,000 for the highly-rated 18-year-old, but their offer was dismissed out of hand by Hamilton. The Scottish side are facing a real battle to keep hold of the Republic of Ireland Under-21 international, with McCarthy regarded as one of the best young prospects in British football. Portsmouth and Celtic both had offers turned down for McCarthy earlier this summer as Hamilton hold out for a higher fee for the teenager. Coyle is thought to be a big admirer of McCarthy and it remains to be seen if he will come back with a new improved bid for the starlet. Prem 2009/10 To Stay Up Win Outright: Burnley 11/8
