Calderwood laments Riordan red

Hibernian manager Colin Calderwood labelled Derek Riordan's late sending off in the 2-0 Edinburgh derby defeat to Hearts as "pointless".

With Hibs trailing to goals from David Templeton and Stephen Elliott, the 27-year-old forward pole-axed Rudi Skacel with a raised foot to the Hearts midfielder's knee in the 88th minute, epitomising the frustration of the home fans.

Calderwood said: "It's important that the emotion doesn't overtake the situation and you've got to remain with 11. We didn't. So close to the end of the game it's pointless."

Calderwood made Riordan captain for his second match in charge, the 1-0 loss at Dundee United, but after a third defeat in his tenure in his first match as boss at Easter Road, he is likely to review his decision.

Riordan will miss Wednesday's Clydesdale Bank Premier League trip to Rangers and could face further disciplinary action.

Hibs could also be in trouble with the Scottish Football Association after numerous missiles were thrown on to the Easter Road playing surface.

Templeton's 19th-minute opener was greeted with two flares being thrown by Hearts fans on to the pitch, while late in the game coins and cigarette lighters were hurled at visiting players Kevin Kyle and Skacel by a section of Hibs fans.

Hearts boss Jim Jefferies said: "The derby's a great occasion and it shouldn't be spoiled by idiots throwing things."

Jefferies was thrilled with his side's response to the 3-0 loss to Kilmarnock. While Templeton and Elliott, who netted his first Hearts goal after 67 minutes, were the match-winners, Jefferies reserved special praise for Skacel and Kyle.

"Kevin Kyle had his best game, I think, since coming back to Scotland," said Jefferies, of the striker he signed for Kilmarnock from Coventry before taking him to Tynecastle. "He wasn't going to be in the team. He knew I wasn't very happy with the last couple of weeks. I said to him 'don't let me down'. He certainly didn't do that."
