Calderwood coy on Hibernian link

Paatelainen made a surprise departure from Easter Road last night after 16 months in charge, the third Scottish Premier League boss to leave his post in less than a week. Calderwood was the first, parting company with Aberdeen on Sunday, hours after they beat Hibs on the final day of the SPL season to qualify for the inaugural Europa League. The 54-year-old, currently on holiday in Spain, has emerged as one of the favourites to succeed Paatelainen. But he said: "I've not thought anything about that. I don't know who's thrown my name in." Asked if we was keen for an immediate return to the game, he added: "I've not really thought about it. "I'm sure I'll start getting itchy feet when all the games start but at the moment I'm having a holiday and we'll see what comes." Hibs midfielder John Rankin claims Paatelainen's resignation had come as a "bolt from the blue". The Finn announced his decision to step down despite leading Hibs into the top six of the SPL for the second season running. Paatelainen admitted earlier in the week his budget had been cut and the club would find it difficult to replace top players if they were sold on. But the news still came as a shock to former Inverness midfielder Rankin. "This has blown me away," he told the Scottish Sun. "I don't know where this decision has come from and it's a major surprise to me. "There was a lot of optimism because of the way we finished the season. We drew with both halves of the Old Firm and beat Hearts at Tynecastle. "That showed there was potential, depth in the squad and everyone was looking to kick on from that. "I am very sorry to see Mixu go. He had enough faith in me to bring me to Hibs and I will always be grateful to him for that." Paatelainen followed Calderwood and Gordon Strachan in leaving an SPL club in the last seven days as Celtic and Aberdeen also hunt for new managers. And Hibs defender Ian Murray believes the exits show how high expectation levels are at the top of the table. "Everyone wants to see Hibs playing in Europe every season but the truth is it's not that simple," he told The Herald. "Dundee United couldn't do it this year either and everyone had tipped them to do well. "That's three of the top six clubs who have lost their manager this week which just shows how competitive and cut-throat it is at that level."
