Adams happy as right-hand man

Derek Adams is settling into life as assistant to Hibernian manager Colin Calderwood and insists he did not covet the top job when John Hughes left last month.

Calderwood was appointed as Hughes' successor, moving from Newcastle where he was assistant boss, and has subsequently named Adams as his own number two.

Adams led Ross County into the Irn Bru First Division and to last season's Scottish Cup final but he did not apply for the Hibs job after Hughes' departure, and said: "I've never expressed an interest, it's always been waiting for someone to come to me. I want to be a manager in my own right at some time, but that time will come - it might be many years, we'll see."

After speaking to Calderwood, Hibs chairman Rod Petrie and chief executive Scott Lindsay, Adams agreed a move to Easter Road last week.

"It's a marvelous football club to come to," he added. "The lure was too big to stay at Ross County."

There were suggestions Calderwood had appointed his successor when he made Adams his number two.

Adams retains ambitions to become a manager, but was aware of the need to accumulate more experience, something he believes he will get at Easter Road.

"I'm only 35 and you would always want to go as a number one, but there are many chairmen out there who might be reluctant to take on such a young manager, they might see it as a risk," he added.

"My ambition is to manage at the highest level, I believe I can do that, but in the future."
