Balakov and Doll linked to vacant Hertha job

Published: 14 Feb 2012 - 12:17:04

Bulgaria's Krassimir Balakov and Germany's Thomas Doll are the leading candidates to take over as Hertha Berlin coach after the German league side sacked Michael Skibbe, according to media reports here.

In the wake of his team's 5-0 drubbing in Stuttgart, Skibbe was shown the door on Sunday after just five games in charge.

Former Hertha midfielder Rene Tretschok has been named as interim coach while a replacement is found with Berlin to host defending Bundesliga champions Borussia Dortmund on Saturday in the German league.

The German media are linking both Balakov, the current coach of Croatia's Hajduk Split and who played in the Bulgaria team which finished fourth at the 1994 World Cup, and ex-Dortmund coach Doll to the vacant position.

Doll resigned as head coach of Saudi Arabian club Al-Hilal in January, while former Iceland coach Eyjolfur Sverisson and ex-Real Madrid boss Bernd Schuster have also been mentioned.

Former Schalke coach Ralf Rangnick is reported to have already distanced himself from the vacant job after stepping down with exhaustion last September.
